Amish Strawberry FestivalDay TripsVisit the Illinois Amish Heritage Center. Visit an early IL Amish home. Enjoy sheep shearing, spinning, wool dyeing, caneing, quilting, and other exhibits. Head out to the countryside. Watch for buggies on the roads, clothes on the line, home gardens, and Amish farmers in the fields. Stop and shop at Beachy's Amish grocery store for noodles, cheeses, jams and much, much more. Bring a hearty appetite, as we'll enjoy an Amish home meal served family-style, in an Amish home. Visit the Strawberry Fest activities and market at the Otto Community Center. Observe more crafting, and shop for unique items. Conclude our Amish Day with a visit to Arthur to do some last-minute Strawberry Fest shopping. Stitch and Sew is a wonderful shopping stop for quilters, but there are also furniture and quilt shops, a bakery and fudge shop, and more. This trip is Activity Level 2 (see Acitivity Levels below). Historic Cahokia and Cahokia MoundsDay TripsTour the historic Cahokia Courthouse. Next visit the 1799 Holy Family Church and Museum, tour the 1810 Jarrot Mansion, the oldest brick home in the state of Illinois. Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the Shrine Restaurant at Our Lady of the Snows. Visit Cahokia Mounds, one of only 22 United Nations World Heritage sites in America. This site was the center of the largest civilization ever in North America until the late 1700's. The Mississippian Culture, peaking around the year 1200, built nearly 140 mounds on this site. Sixty-three remain, including the 100' tall Monks' Mound. Visit the excellent interpretive center here, and maybe stroll among some of the mounds. Historic Hotels of St. LouisDay TripsThroughout its history, St. Louis has been home to many of the finest and largest hotels in America. Among St. Louis' posh 19th century hotels were the Southern, National, Planters and Lindell. Thanks to fire, neglect and the economy, these hotels no longer exist, but countless stories about the hotels and their famous guests remain. On the other hand, we have recently witnessed the awesome restoration and conversion of some of the early 20th century hotels and buildings into first class landmark hotels. Touchstones to our PastDay TripsTour (mostly riding) the beautiful Bellefontaine Cemetery. Established in 1849, the cemetery sprawls over 327 acres in North St. Louis. See the gravesites of William Clark, Adolphus Busch, Thomas Hart Benton, and many other notables. Admire the large family mausoleums, learn the history of the rural garden cemetery movement, and hear lots of interesting stories. Tour (mostly riding) the 1857 magnificently-landscaped Calvary Cemetery. Visit the gravesites of William Tecumseh Sherman, Tennessee Williams, Dred Scott, and others. Learn about many burial customs and traditions. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Bissell Mansion. Enjoy yet another rural garden cemetery, New Mount Sinai, the largest Jewish cemetery in the region. See the large family mausoleums of the St. Louis department store magnates, and learn about Jewish burial customs and traditions. Tour Jefferson Barracks National Military Cemetery, one of the largest military cemeteries in the U.S. Over 150,000 service persons and their spouses are buried here, among the rolling hills and rows of white marble headstones. Visit a Hindu Temple, stop by the St. Louis Abbey, have lunch at St. Raymond's Maronite Church, tour the Temple Israel and finally visit the Daar ul Islam Mosque.
