  • Bonfire Nights at Babler State Park

    If the Bonfire you are requesting is full, please enroll for the waiting list! We are confirming with St. Louis County that we may enroll more people! Nothing says fall quite like a bonfire! Bring your family and join us Saturdays in October for a crackling bonfire and a new activity each week! Bring a picnic, charcuterie board, and a cooler and put your feet up around a pre-lit bonfire. Learn to use GPS units, navigate around camp in the dark and get rewarded with some sweet treats. A video with how-to instructions for the GPS units will be provided via email a week prior to the program. Learn to operate the GPS unit in the comfort of your own home and send in questions via email or ask over Zoom. Saturday evening, GPS units will be handed out (one per family) and everyone will get the chance to try them and ask questions before heading out to find waypoints. Grab a costume and your sense of adventure and join us for this one of a kind family event! Note: If you choose to use a personal GPS device, you must be able to input Latitude and Longitude coordinates. PRCE is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment. WEEK 2, October 10: Night Hikes and Star Gazing: Oh the things you can see, smell and hear at night! Come spend some time outside while we explore the woods with all our senses! Discover the special adaptations that help nocturnal animals survive, the reason pirates wore eye patches and why October is the month of Mars!     Put your thinking hat on and join us to solve some puzzles to discover new areas of the park and some old history. Families will work together with a GPS unit to find locations around Babler State Park. Instructions will be provided so no previous experience is necessary. One GPS unit will be available for each family in attendance. Bring your sense of adventure and join us for this one of a kind family event!     Spend some time outdoors with your family! Join professional outdoor educators for a 2-4 mile hike where you can start to learn how to identify plants and animals that live around you.     Cover the basics and let’s go fishing! Participants will learn to bait a hook, use a bobber, and cast a closed face reel. Fishing poles and bait will be provided or you can bring your own. Families are welcome to bring chairs. All fishing is catch and release. A fishing permit is not required for this program. Masks are required for 9 years old and up.   • Fossil Hunt and ID

    Climb in and get dirty searching for fossils in our dry creek bed. See the power of water that shaped and continually reshapes our valley while climbing around obstacles. Identify the fossils you find and learn about the role oceans played in forming these fossils right here in Missouri! Please wear closed-toe shoes that are ok to get a bit muddy. We will be exploring a creek bed that has an extremely uneven walking surface. Participants may not take any fossils home but can take plenty of pictures!   • Intro to Family Camping

    Have you wanted to experience the excitement and bonding of tent camping with your family but don’t know where to start? Join us and ask all your questions! Practice putting up your tent, making your site comfortable, how to build a fire, and what not to touch in the forest. You will receive a copy of a camping packing list and recipes for delicious campfire meals. This is a family program and we will be teaching families with kids age 5 and up these skills.
