    Learn the basics of a new outdoor skill on First Fridays! This year-round program offers different program topics each month lead by a variety of instructors. Programs include archery, firebuilding, hiking, geocaching, kayaking, and more! Sign up for all 12 First Friday classes and save! This class is designed for beginners with minimal experience; all equipment is provided *This date has been canceled October 6: Nature Photography: Learn Nature Photography basics such as composition, and how to work with you camera or phone from an experienced photographer Lisa Delorenzo who volunteers with the Missouri Botanical Gardens.* This date has been canceled November 3: Introduction to Climbing and Knots *This date has been canceled Quarter 2 December 1: Outdoor Cooking: We will learn different cooking methods including types of outdoor stoves, and will make a few delicious treats for ourselves. We'll even make a few holiday treats! January 5: Navigating Trails: How to read a map, topography, basic compass use and trail markers February 2: Fire building: We will start small with the art of the no-match fire, learn what to carry with you while hiking and how to build a fire to relax in front of with no accelerant Quarter 3 March 1: Bird ID Hike: Hike with an experienced birder who will discuss some basics of birding, how to identify bird calls and what resources they use to identify birds April 5: Fishing: Learn the basics of fishing; from how to tie and bait the hook and where to cast your reel, to how to remove the fish and what to have in your tackle box May 3: Wildflower Hike and ID: Find some of the best trails for wildflower hikes, how to slow down and smell the native species and what resources we use to ID on the move Quarter 4 June 7: Mushroom Hunting: Learn about the wide variety of fungi that make the forest their home and their role in the ecosystem. Learn to how to identify mushrooms and what kinds can be beneficial and harmful. July 5: Stand-Up Paddleboards/SUP: Jump into the world of SUP and learn how to stand up, and where to enjoy this hobby August 2: Canoeing 101: Intro to Canoeing includes how to enter/exit the boat, holding the paddle properly, and types of strokes. We will partner up and practice. Wear a swimsuit and some sun protection. We will be partnering with Big Muddy Adventures Pay a little more and help others enjoy learning and fun with Community Ed! Each of our adult programs includes an option to ‘pay a little more'. All funds raised help to provide enriching and engaging experiences for youth, families, and adults in need of financial assistance. Gold Card members (Parkway and Rockwood district residents ages 60 and older) receive a 50% discount for this class. The discounted rate will automatically be applied at checkout. You must have a Gold Card issued in your name to receive the discounted rate. If you do not have a Gold Card and would like to request one, complete an online request form. For any questions, please call us at 636-891-6644. Silver Card members (residents outside of the Parkway and Rockwood districts ages 60 and older) receive a 15% discount for this class. The discounted rate will automatically be applied at checkout. You must have a Silver Card membership to receive the discounted rate (you will not receive a physical card). If you are not registered for a Silver Card and would like to register, complete this online request form.
