We'll even make a few holiday treats! January 5: Navigating Trails: How to read a map, topography, basic compass use and trail markers February 2: Fire building: We will start small with the art of the no-match fire, learn what to carry with you while hiking and how to build a fire to relax in front of with no accelerant Quarter 3 March 1: Bird ID Hike: Hike with an experienced birder who will discuss some basics of birding, how to identify bird calls and what resources they use to identify birds April 5: Fishing: Learn the basics of fishing; from how to tie and bait the hook and where to cast your reel, to how to remove the fish and what to have in your tackle box May 3: Wildflower Hike and ID: Find some of the best trails for wildflower hikes, how to slow down and smell the native species and what resources we use to ID on the move Quarter 4 June 7: Mushroom Hunting: Learn about the wide variety of fungi that make the forest their home and their role in the ecosystem. Learn to how to identify mushrooms and what kinds can be beneficial and harmful. July 5: Stand-Up Paddleboards/SUP: Jump into the world of SUP and learn how to stand up, and where to enjoy this hobby August 2: Canoeing 101: Intro to Canoeing includes how to enter/exit the boat, holding the paddle properly, and types of strokes. We will partner up and practice. Wear a swimsuit and some sun protection. We will be partnering with Big Muddy Adventures Pay a little more and help others enjoy learning and fun with Community Ed!     Start your weekend off right with your hiking boots and some new friends! Each month we will meet to socialize and hike a different trail.   • WiLD Family Fun: GPS Egg Hunt

    An egg hunt like no other. Use a handheld GPS to find eggs hidden all over the Babler Outdoor Education Center. Exchange your eggs in for prizes at the end! Taught by Community Ed Instructors.   • Wildflower Walks

    Watch the woods come back to life as we visit glades, prairies, forests and other unique MO ecosystems to see the variety of native wildflowers blossom. This series will be held on a different trail each week. Hiking locations will be sent out each week prior to the hike and will include state parks and conservations areas in the St. Louis region (within an hour drive of West County). All trails will be marked easy to moderate and will average 2-3 miles in length. Taught by Community Ed Instructor Aimee Gao.     Take off your watch, put away your phone, and join us for a rejuvenating morning in the woods grounded in Shinrin-yoku.   • Beautiful Bluebells Hike and Picnic

    See one of the area’s most stunning displays of bluebells as we hike along Swimming Deer Trail at St. Francois State Park. In addition to the blooming bluebells, we will hike along the bluffs of the Big River and enjoy a boxed lunch from Russell’s Café and Bakery. The hike will be 3.4 miles with an elevation gain of 328 feet. Participants are encouraged to bring trekking poles. Taught by Community Ed Instructor Aimee Gao.     Indulge in nature and experience a day outdoors with your little one as you engage in activities that will help you build your "outdoor toolbox", including: a short hike/storybook walk, and more on the beautiful grounds of Babler State Park. Engage with your child and other families in new ways that you can adopt into your everyday leisure time. This program is taught by a CE instructor and in collaboration with Parkway and Rockwood Parents As Teachers Programs.     Birdwatch with Me!

    Kids, grab your parent, aunt, grandpa or friend and join us for an introduction to birdwatching! Learn the basics of how to use binoculars, habitats and migration patterns and how to spot those birds! Then take a hike on the Hawthorn trail and practice spotting some birds! We will lead a short lesson at the Babler Outdoor Education Center before driving to the Hawthorn trail located nearby in Babler State Park. Course is taught by Community Ed Instructors.
