Historic Cahokia and Cahokia Mounds

Tour the historic Cahokia Courthouse. Next visit the 1799 Holy Family Church and Museum, tour the 1810 Jarrot Mansion, the oldest brick home in the state of Illinois. Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the Shrine Restaurant at Our Lady of the Snows. Visit Cahokia Mounds, one of only 22 United Nations World Heritage sites in America. This site was the center of the largest civilization ever in North America until the late 1700's. The Mississippian Culture, peaking around the year 1200, built nearly 140 mounds on this site. Sixty-three remain, including the 100' tall Monks' Mound. Visit the excellent interpretive center here, and maybe stroll among some of the mounds. This trip is Activity Level 2 (see Acitivity Levels below).
